We were in that same situation. My wife, due to hormones or stress would wake up and I would be sawing logs so bad she couldn't get back to sleep. For a long time, I slept in another bed and that doesn't help anything. Problem was, I had Obstructive Sleep Apnea and snoring was the least of my problems with that. Now I have a nice quiet CPAP machine and no more snoring. Now we BOTH SLEEP in the same bed together. The mask takes a little bit to get used to and sleep studies are a lot odd but all in all, it wasn't costly to fix that and I have more energy and should have less problems down the road.

turn him on his side or his stomach since most people snore when on their backs

My ex used to do this, I spent the whole night jabbing him to turn him on his side which helped, until he rolled over onto his back again.

He smoked and drank and was slightl overweight which all make snoring worse, if your Dad smokes and drinks perhaps he could cut down a bit. And a night in the spare room would help your mum catch up on much needed sleep!

Have him get tested for sleep apnea.

Thats a very common problem, especially for people who have or do smoke. He probably has some degree of obstrutive sleep apnea. Is you father tired a lot during the day and falls asleep watching TV and stuff like that? I would recommend that he have a sleep study to make sure he doesn't have sleep apnea. If he does there are all sorts of ways to help minimize the snoring or even eliminate it. On the other hand, if he just snores without any other problems, sleeping in another room has been a successful solution for many couples. I have lots of experience in this area. Let me know if you have sny more questions.
