There are many reasons why people snore and there are many treatments to help prevent snoring depending on the cause of you snoring problem. In all cases snoring is caused by a partial blockage of your airway.
This blockage can be caused due to a number of things from mucus, to conditions that cause your air ways to swell, to fatty deposits in your throat, to your tongue blocking your air passage during sleep. Some snoring may be related to temporary causes such as colds which may result in a build up of mucus in your throat or airways while you are sleeping.
Others may be caused by more permanent causes such as sleep apnea. Most causes of snoring however, can be treated. However, not all snoring treatments are equally effective and some may even pose health risks. Stop snoring pills are one form of snoring treatment that may not only lack effectiveness but may also pose some danger to your health as well.
How Stop Snoring Pills Are Supposed To Work
Stop snoring pills are a herbal based medication that like any other medication in pill form you take and within a certain period of time it is supposed to produce results. In the case of stop snoring pills the results of these pills are supposed to help clear the excess mucus from your system and reduce the swelling of your nasal passages and throat, helping your airway to remain open during sleep.
Obviously these pills are only going to be effective in cases where there is excess mucus present or swelling of the nasal passages or throat. These pills perform the same functions as nasal and throat sprays designed for snoring and in that respect they can prove helpful in relieving some of the swelling however, even though these pills are offered over the counter, rarely if ever do medical professionals recommend them for use, choosing instead to recommend sprays to solve these nose and throat problems.
One reason for this is that stop snoring pills contain ingredients that doctors simply do not feel are safe.
Why Do Doctors Think Stop Snoring Pills Are Unsafe, They Are Herbal Aren’t They?
Since most stop snoring pills are herbal, consumers automatically think of them as safe. After all herbal remedies have been around forever and are used for treatment of all kinds of illnesses.
The problem with this thinking, is that herbs are like anything else, while the majority of them are completely safe you can’t assume that just because something is a herb it is going to be safe to take.
Take for instance Belladonna an ingredient in most stop snoring pills. Although it is a herb belladonna is one of the most toxic plants in the Western hemisphere. Not only can this plant cause all sorts of problems including hallucinations it can also be deadly. While it is used in certain prescription medications the amount is monitored carefully.
With over the counter medications the amount may vary from brand to brand and oftentimes people taking this medication do not even know the exact amount of this herb they are getting. This makes the taking of any anti snoring pill contain ing this ingredient over a long period of time quite risky. Many of the other herbs used in stop snoring pills may also cause an allergic reaction in certain people and these reactions can be mild to extremely severe.
While pills may seem like an easy way to stop snoring they simply do not work in every situation and those situations in which they may prove somewhat effective they still pose a risk to your health. Since there are other products out there than can help reduce the swelling of nasal and throat passages and cut down on the amount of mucus that builds up during sleep it is advisable to use these products that pose less risk to your health than stop snoring pills.
After all, the goal of any anti snoring treatment is to allow you and those you love to get a peaceful and restful night’s sleep and how much rest can you really get if you are forced to worry about the side effects of the stop snoring pill you just took.
