Causes Of Insomnia In Children – Know These Causes To Help Your Children Sleep

Wednesday 28 October 2009 @ 10:05 pm

Did you know that children can suffer from insomnia as often as adults. And often, the reasons for insomnia in children are the same for adults. There are more common causes of insomnia among children and adults than causes that are uniquely found in children or in adults.

Stress

Stress comes in many forms. This is one of the leading causes of insomnia in children and also in adults. Stress can come in a variety of forms, and there is little doubt that anxiety is a leading cause for insomnia in children. Distress about a bully or classwork can manifest itself as insomnia in children. The pressure of fitting in and making friends as well as keeping friends can be heavy for children to bear and can be the causes of insomnia in children.

Moreover, perceived violence, whether real or imagined, could be the root of sleepless nights for children. Children have relatively simple thoughts which are not complicated. Their exposure to depravities as seen in television and heard on the radio can disturb them enough to trigger insomnia. Fear and anxiety over losing a pet or loved one may also affect a child’s ability to fall asleep or stay asleep.

The Environment Factor

Another big factor to the causes of insomnia in children is the environment that the child is exposed to. It’s good practice to maintain a sleep-conducive environment for anyone, but children thrive with consistency. Allowing the child to sleep in on weekends can disrupt the sleep pattern for the rest of the week. Consistent sleep schedules are important to maintain for children, even if a child insists on staying awake longer to play or watch television.

Other causes of insomnia in children related to the environment are the weather and the seasons as well as pollutants. Rainy weather as well as stormy weather that last for several days can be disturbing enough to be a cause of insomnia in children. The season can also be some of the causes of insomnia in children because some seasons bring allergens with them. Like natural allergens, pollutants can causing breathing difficulties and lead to disrupted sleep. Allergic reations can result in discomfort which can compound sleep disturbances.

Identifying The Psychological Causes Of Insomnia

Tuesday 27 October 2009 @ 6:36 pm

The sleep disorder known as insomnia is a very inconvenient condition that affects a lot of people. It is, in fact, the most common sleep disorder that occurs in people, even children. There are many reasons for this disorder; there are psychological causes for insomnia as well as physical and other causes. The psychological causes of insomnia are related to one another through a common factor that is stress. We encounter stress in every aspect of our lives; it is the pressure we all feel. This pressure can come from work, personal life and the environment in general. In other words, stress is a way of life that can not be avoided thoroughly.

The Role Of Stress

Stress is one of the factors that generate a lot of psychological issues. Stress is the underlying cause of most of the psychological causes of insomnia in people everywhere throughout the world. The psychological causes of insomnia center mostly on anxiety, depression and worries. These are almost all related to stress in one way or another. This just underlines the fact that stress is a major contributor to world-wide insomnia. While stress is the main contributor to the psychological causes of insomnia, there are also medical and physical causes that can also contribute to a person having insomnia; it isn’t all just in the mind.

In depression, stress of an event or some trauma can contribute as psychological causes of insomnia. There are many stress factors that contribute to depression but it is usually a traumatic event or something negatively life changing for the person involved. Depression affects the mind in such a way that their sleep cycle is affected as well.
The stress of life in general can build up small worries to large worries which cause anxiety, another of the psychological causes of insomnia. We have all had nights when we could not sleep because we couldn’t get our mind to shut down. Some mental and emotional issues also affect a person’s sleeping habits.

Treating Insomnia

Treating insomnia that stems from psychological causes is doable. The psychological causes of insomnia should initially be tackled to lead the way to better and sounder sleep. Since stress is the leading psychological cause of insomnia, it is safe to believe that reducing the exposure of stress is beneficial for the person. There are many techniques out there that are designed to help a person either avoid stress or greatly reduce the effects that the stress has on them, their body, and ultimately their quality of sleep.

Medical Causes of Insomnia – Key Facts You Should Know About Your Sleeping Problems

Tuesday 27 October 2009 @ 6:36 pm

Insomnia is a sleep condition where the individual affected suffers from lack of sleep. This lack of sleep stems from psychological and medical causes of insomnia. Although there are many psychological causes which may result in insomnia, the medical causes of insomnia may be few.

Medications Can Cause Insomnia

One of the medical causes of insomnia are medications and drugs which may b prescribed to the individual and even over the counter drugs, which the individual takes. Medication can be one of the causes of insomnia in children as well as adults. Medication or drugs which contain nicotine may result in insomnia in certain individuals. Antidepressants, beta blockers and beta agonists can also be the medical causes of insomnia for some people. The ingestion of drugs and prescribed medication affects people differently. This means not everybody reacts the same way to the drug or medication, which implies that insomnia may or may not occur to those who take the same drug or medication.

Medical Conditions

Some medical conditions have also been pinpointed as some of the medical causes of insomnia in people. These medical conditions include hyperthyroidism, Parkinson’s disease, allergies, asthma, hypertension, arthritis and heart disease. Of course, some medical causes of insomnia will also include the onset of pain and discomfort caused by injuries and other conditions which manifest pain or discomfort in the person. A tingling sensation, not necessarily painful can also keep the individual from getting a good night’s sleep.

Sleep apnea is also another of the many different medical causes of insomnia. This condition is actually a breathing disorder where the individual may stop breathing for a very short period of time while sleeping. As the body gasps for air when this happens, the individual may wake from the effort. Restless leg syndrome is also another cause of insomnia which can be attributed to the medical aspect of its causes. This condition is one in which the individuals legs feel a sensation akin to twitching or feels the urge to move when it is in a stationary position.

The aforementioned medical causes of insomnia are outnumbered by the possible psychological causes. The medical causes of insomnia may be easier to deal with than the psychological causes of the sleep disorder. There are also cases of the medical causes of insomnia being difficult to resolve since the underlying medical reason or condition needs to be dealt with to free the individual from the disorder.

Common Causes Of Insomnia – It’s Good To Know

Sunday 25 October 2009 @ 12:02 pm

There are several common causes of insomnia which are all related to one another. Insomnia is a disorder that manifests itself as in the act of sleeping or trying to sleep. The person who suffers from insomnia basically has a difficult time getting to sleep and maintaining sleep. Many people would like to solve this seep disorder to be able to get on with their lives. Fortunately, a lot of times the insomnia will be of only a short duration and will resolve itself without any help.

Among those that can resolve easily are the physical causes of insomnia. These are usually some degree of pain or discomfort that stems from injuries, ailments and sicknesses which can be treated.

The most common causes of insomnia, however, are depression, anxiety, and stress, not physical illness. Anxiety and depression are both generally, but not always, caused by stress. Stress can be seen as the pressure that drives people to strive hard and also to fold in. Stress can be a positive driving factor for many people, one which energizes them and makes them do their best work in order to achieve their goals; for others, however, stress is something to be feared and avoided. Stress is perhaps tops among the common causes of insomnia simply because just about everyone is exposed to one level of stress or another in the course of their daily lives. Stress can be seen in the work place, at home and when with family and friends or with other employee and employers.

Anxiety can be a common cause of insomnia because a fearful and anxious person will have a difficult time sleeping as well as maintaining sleep. It is common because many people are anxious and fearful over something in their lives most of the time. The fears of children and adults can manifest themselves when the individual is alone in bed and can promote loss of sleep due to thinking things over and over. There are also other things to be anxious or fearful for such as loss of work, loss of loved ones and many others.

Another of the common causes of insomnia is depression, whether it be the illness or a fleeting feeling. Depression can be a source of torture to some people, with insomnia being just one of many painful symptoms. The loss and loneliness that depression generate can cause a person to lose sleep simply due to the sheer strength of the feelings. These strong feelings will cause physical reactions in the person who is having them. The body also slows down and the person is more and more lethargic or anxious due to the bodily reactions that manifests when a person feels depressed.

Physical Causes Of Insomnia – Facts You Should Be Aware Of

Sunday 25 October 2009 @ 12:02 pm

Insomnia is a condition that is characterized by a person’s lack of sleep. Anybody can get insomnia, even children. The concept of this sleep disorder is that the person affected by it has a difficult time achieving sleep and keeping asleep. Insomnia is caused by several physical factors and psychological factors. The physical causes of insomnia are varied and have different factors.

Basically, the physical causes of insomnia are dependent on what the condition of the body is. Diseases, disorders, and conditions are a few of the outside influences that affect the health of the body. Women are supposed to be more susceptible to the physical causes of insomnia than men. The monthly hormonal shifts in women is a major factor in their susceptibility to insomnia. The menstrual cycle of women is one of the physical causes of insomnia in women everywhere. Insomnia can be experienced as a symptom of pregnancy at the point that gestation occurs. The point is that, hormones play a big role in the physical causes of insomnia.

Another one of the causes of insomnia in adults is age. It is not actually age per say that causes insomnia but instead it is the reduction of the chemical melatonin as humans grow older. Melatonin is believed to be a catalyst for sleep, thus, a decrease of melatonin allows for less sleep, or trouble falling asleep in older individuals.

Other certain diseases, like heart disease, hyperthyroidism and arthritis can be physical causes of insomnia in people who suffer from these diseases. Some illnesses do have insomnia as one of their symptoms which is why it is important to know when the sleep disorder occurred and for how long it has been happening when consulting a doctor. Physical injuries are another physical cause of insomnia in certain individuals. Pain from injuries can prevent people from falling asleep as well as cause sleep interruption.

There are very straightforward solutions for all of these physical causes of insomnia. Treating the physical symptoms is the secret to curing insomnia caused by these physical causes. Medication and therapy can help to do this.

Keeping It Simple – What Is Sleep?

Saturday 24 October 2009 @ 2:43 am

On average, people spend about 3000 hours a year asleep although unfortunately, some people are unable to get as much and will often seek out the best sleep aids they can find to help. However, you may often ask, “what is sleep and why do we need it”?

So, what is sleep? Our sleep patterns tend to follow a set cycle every time we try to go to sleep; that of REM (rapid eye movement) that is when most dreaming occurs and non-rapid REM. This cycle will repeat several times a night. Although an infant spends around half their sleep time in REM, the average adult will only spend about twenty percent in a REM sleep pattern.

Current research has shown that non-REM sleep will typically consist of four stages before reaching REM sleep. Stage one is the time when we feel half awake and half asleep but our muscles will begin to relax. After about ten minutes, we reach Stage two that lasts for around twenty minutes. It is during this time when we are fully asleep that our heart rate and breathing will slow down. While Stage two lasts the longest, we then enter Stage three and our deep sleep pattern changes our heart rate and breathing levels to their lowest. Eventually, we reach Stage four where it is more difficult to be woken and if we are, we are often pretty grumpy! All these stages of non-REM typically last up to 90 minutes before REM sleep begins.

During REM sleep and although we are not aware, our brain is particularly active and our eyes move rapidly (hence the term, rapid eye movement). Although your body is resting when you are asleep, your brain is certainly not. Scientists are now able to record brain activity through the use of expensive equipment, and resulting sleep studies show that different areas of the brain are certainly very active. The time when we may dream and sleepwalk is when we are in REM sleep. This is also the time our breathing rate and blood pressure begins to rise although the body will not respond to this. It is often suggested that this could be nature’s way of protecting us from harming ourselves when we dream.

How much sleep we require differs between individuals, but if you don’t feel sleepy during the day, then you are probably getting enough. Sadly, many of us either do not get the opportunity for enough sleep or, when the opportunity arises we find we can’t sleep anyway and continuously look for how to get a good nights sleep!

It is hoped that this quick overview about what is sleep, will have been of benefit to you. If you feel you body has become ‘out of sync’ with your normal sleep patterns, try some of the all natural sleep aids that are available today.
