How To Get Rid Of Acne Scars – Are Invasive Treatments Best?

Saturday 15 August 2009 @ 8:06 pm

If you have been looking for ways to get rid of acne scars you have probably come across various different treatment options. It’s difficult to know what the most effective treatment options are? In this article we will look at the various treatment options avalable and discuss whether invasive surgical treatments are better than topical creams and ointments.

You really need to know what type of scars you have before deciding on the best course of treament. You will then be able to choose the best course of treatment. The scars can look like small holes, open pores or shallow pits. Sometimes, they can look like a raised mass of tissue or just small imperfections.

You might want to think about treatments such as dermabrasion, chemical peels and laser resurfacing if you have shallow scars and small imperfections. All these treatments work on the principle of removing the top layer of the skin in order to remove the scars and leave a smoother surface. Even though these procedures are quick to perform, taking only up to an hour, they are very expensive. Laser resurfacing is the most expensive option, costing around $3000 per treatment. Chemical peels are the cheaper options, costing around $750 per treatment. You may need several treatments, however, to achieve the desire result. Usually the skin is red and swollen afterwards and can take a couple of weeks to recover.

You could also try dermal fillers which are injected into the depressed area of teh scar to help raise it to the level of the surrounding skin. Unfortunately the results are only temporary, lasting between three to six months and the treatment costs anything from $300 to £1200.

For more severe scarring punch techniques or subcision procedures are recommended. These treatments are done under anesthetic and involve cutting the scar from the skin. These treatments are not as expensive, less than $200 per treatment, but you may need a few treatments to get effective results. Brusing and swelling are common side effects that can last for several weeks.

Getting rid of acne scars is often a difficult process and may require a combination of treatments to get the best results. An example is that punch techniques or subcision for deeper scars might need to be combined with chemical peels or laser resurfacing to smooth the skin.

The advantages of these types of treatment are that they are quick to perform and you can start to see the results after only a few treatments. However, these treatments can be extremely costly and not without risks.

If you are not sure about invasive treatments, then there are other options available.  The use of topical creams, ointments and gels can help in getting rid of scars by softening, smoothing and reducing fine acne scarring. Milder creams can be bought over the counter, but stronger medications can only be obtained through prescription. Some of the commercial brands of creams and gels available to get rid of acne scars include Medema gel, Alpha Hydroxy skin treatment and Bio Oil.

Using acne scar creams are certainly a cheaper option than more invasive treaments, but they do not work effectviely for everyone. This is no quick fix as this type of treatment will often take time and patience before any results are seen.

Acne scarring, especially on the face, can really blow your self-confidence and self-esteem. Which treatment you choose depends on how the scars are affecting your life and how quickly and effectively you want to get rid of them. Invasive treatments certainly seem to be the quickest and best options, but they can be extremely costly and there could be side effects and risks. Creams and ointments are a cheaper method of getting rid of scars but it will take a much longer time to see results, if at all. In the end it’s up to you what you decide to do, but it’s always advisable to consult your doctor or dermatologist first.

How Adult Acne Treatments Differ From Teenage Acne Treatments

Saturday 15 August 2009 @ 8:06 pm

When you think about acne, do you think about spotty teenagers with oily skin and greasy hair? You’d be right, because acne happens to about 85% of teenagers, affecting more boys than girls. This is due to the over-activity of the sebaceous glands that secret oil on the skin during puberty. During adolescence there is a sharp increase in the production of androgens in the body which stimulate the sebaceous glands. This is why teenagers are affected more by acne than adults.

Getting acne at any age can cause problems emotionally. No one wants to look in the mirror and see a spotty face looking back at them. For teenage acne sufferers this is a particulary vulnerable time when they are concerned with their appearance and how others perceive them. Having acne can be a very embarrassing condition which can really knock a person’s self-confidence and self-esteem. This doesn’t mean to say that adults aren’t affected by spots, but they seem better equiped to deal with them. They probably laugh it off and say that they are turning into teenagers!

So why are adult acne treatments different from teenage acne treatments? For starters, adult acne is slightly different from teenage acne. Teenagers have the tendency to suffer more with blackheads, whiteheads, papules and pustules, whilst adults tend to have more papules and cysts. Whilst teenage acne is predomiantly caused by an over-production of sebum, adult acne can be caused by hormonal fluctuations, stress, coming off birth control pills and reactions to cosmetics. For these reasons, adult acne affects more women than men. It’s not unusual for a woman to get spotty around the time of their periods, during pregnancy and during menopause. Another possible cause of acne in adult women could be polycystic ovary syndrome.

So what are the differences between adult acne and teenage acne treatments?

1.    Teenage skin is usually oily and acne products marketed towards teens contain ingredients that cause the skin to produce less oil. Adults should stay away from teen marketed products, unless of course your skin is very oily, because these can be too drying. You should look for medication that is specific to the adult market.

2.Over-the-counter products to treat teenage acne is mostly the same as treating adult acne. However, a teenager will be given a lower dosage of prescription only medication than an adult, based on body weight.

3.    Oral contraceptives are sometimes prescribed to treat adult acne in women to help balance the hormonal fluctuations that cause acne around menstruation. Some women, especially if post-menopausal, are recommended Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) if they are also experiencing other symptoms.

Using prescription only or over-the-counter medication is the same treatment strategy whether you are a teenager or adult with acne.

The clear skin tips steps for keeping skin clear are straight forward. Choose a medicated face wash for your skin type and use daily. Is your skin more dry or oily? Is your skin both dry and oil then you probably have combination skin.

Looking for products with antibacterial properties is very important. Bacteria needs to be handled by using antibacterial products. Make sure your skin care products have benzoyl peroxide, or are aloe Vera or tea tree oil based.

The second of the clear skin tips, do not over wash your face with medicated face washes. Thinking you will imporve your acne by washing more often is a mistake. More acne can occure, so don’t make the mistake. If you over wash you might find your skin dry and irritated.

The third of the clear skin tips is to apply topical treatments to your acne. You can choose from lotions, creams or gels. Your skin type will determine the products. Look on the package for the topical treatments strength. Mild cream or gel will do if you have mild acne. Don’t use one that is too strong or you will irritate your skin. Which product to use can be confusing make sure to ask the pharmacist if you unsure of which treatment is best for you.

The forth step in the series of clear skin tips is often overlooked. The skin must be moisturized. Look for a moisturizer with green tea. Make sure the moisturizer doesn’t have any type of oil. Most moisturizers will indicate if it is light or for acne prone skin. Check the label if you have questions.

The fifth step is to drink a lot of water. Drinking water moisturizes the skin and repairs skin and tissue. Drink a lot of water each day.  More information on clear skin tips can be found on Let’s Talk Acne.

Using these clear skin tips can quickly improve the condition of your skin. You will also see less acne appearing. Twice a day you must use a good skin care program.
